Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds Overdrive – Nintendo Switch – Released: 12/7/17 – $9.99
Short Review (Review copy provided by 5pb)
This game is surprisingly a fun time but it has a very big flaw. Start off with that flaw, it lacks online play. This game would be so much better if it had some sort of online play either with friends or drop in/out play from random people online. The game offers a lot for the price with a bunch of character but sadly every character has to be leveled up on their own. I found that picking one character and running through the game was the best option but then if you invite a friend to play they will be really underleveled but the game is easy enough that it doesn’t really matter that much. I would say go for it if you want some mindless button mashing for a good price. The story is a bit too serious and the lack of online makes it less appealing but it is a fun game that I couldn’t put down for several hours the first time I played it.
I really love this icon with all the main characters and the villains:
Story
Surprisingly this game takes its story a little too seriously…. It is about a man, named Phantom, that is trying to reclaim his powers. How you say? By giving people special powers that will be able to rip a hole in space-time that leads to breaks in the Phantom’s seals. A group of girls with super nature powers decide to stop him so they team up to take down his minions and defeats the people he has given powers to. The story is a bit much for such a simple button mashing game. Not that it is bad but they could have just told me the villain and that he had given powers to people that joined his team. Giving you the incentive to go after these people before defeating him.
Gameplay
You have your standard button masking gameplay but has a few twists. The game does offer a leveling up system that will allow you to upgrade and gain new abilities. Only issue is these are locked to a single character so if you decide you want to play as someone else you start off from the beginning again. This is true for anyone who wants to play with you as well. The game is on a 2D plane with the option to jump from the foreground to the background as enemies will jump to and from as well. My only issue with this mechanic is they never explain that you can do this. The game does a poor job at explaining what buttons can combos you can preform. The only way to see all of these is by going into the options and looking at the controls. I wish they had it all in the pause screen since there is nothing really there with a ton of empty space. It would have been great to have some sort of Street Fighter button combo in the pause menu.
Personal Experience
I really enjoy playing this game and it has been great fun with friends. The game is built to be silly and fun without it being tough as nails. The game is really easy but does offer other modes that will make it harder on you. My nephew loved playing with me since I can easily do a lot of damage to enemies since my character was already maxed so when he was playing it looked like we did a lot even though it was just me really fighting. The bosses are a bit rough though since they are pretty cheap and will likely kill you the first time if you don’t know what buttons do yet.
Final Thoughts
I would say go for it! The game looks weird from trailers but once you see gameplay it is fairly simple and if you like this sort of gameplay it is hard to put down. It is great for kids since if you are able to level up a little bit before letting them play it will seem like they are doing a whole lot. New people may find it a bit confusing since all the characters do different things and each button does something different. The game can be a little complicated unless you take the time out to look at the controls for a bit.
UPDATE: 5/31/18
I would give this game a 9 out of 10!
