Nintendo Switch – Saturday Morning RPG #147

Not sure if I would really call this a Saturday Morning RPG… but I do like it!

Saturday Morning RPG – Nintendo Switch – Released: 4/26/18 – $9.99

Short Review (Review copy provided by Limited Run Games)

Just read the full review… It is a fairly short game at around 4-6 hours. I would give this game a 7 out of 10!

To be honest I really don’t like the icon on this one looks a bit washed out:

Story

Marty is your average student but is gifted a notebook that gives him the powers to fight off evil. While each episode out of five is different, the central plot is Marty has attracted the Commander HOOD with his new powers. He then has to fight against him at every turn. Each episode does play out the same way much like a normal cartoon. Villain shows up to cause trouble and you have to go take care of them.

Gameplay

This get a little bit weird here, the game is generally a turn based RPG with some quirks. You will use your notebook to customize your character with stickers and notebook covers to change stats. I found this really simple to use but sometime enemies will just beat you senseless for no reason. When you start a fight you will need to scratch off stickers to gain perks like more damage, enemies do less damage, or you gain more hp for the fight. These are great but you do this every fight and it becomes boring really quickly and since you don’t know what kind of enemies you will fight you won’t know which stickers to have ready. The boss battles on the other hand can be extremely tough with enemies do massive damage or you having no clue what they do. The first boss I would power up to then attack just to find out I did no damage since their shield blocked everything. So I wasted a ton of MP for a big attack for it to do nothing.

Personal Experience

When I was starting to feel as though it was like a Saturday Morning Cartoon I was quickly pushed in the opposite direction. The open and cutscenes feel like it but slow combat and the notebook rubbing to get perks can be a chore. Everything reference is pretty amazing I was shocked to find out the fastest method of going places has you riding the Back to the Future hover board. I really love all the 90s reference even if I don’t get all of them like I know of GI Joe but have no clue about the villain.

Final Thoughts

This game is a lot of fun a little bit of a shame it is so short. For the price and how short it is a bit tough to take in. I had a great time running through the game and tried to play almost every sat for the month to get kind of the same feeling as watching a cartoon in the morning. I slowly wrote out this review to have it out by Saturday so yeah! I would give this game a 7 out of 10, there are too many times I found myself bored during fights or getting myself beat senseless and the shortness of the game is a bit too rough.
