A game made today that seems to have been lost for a long time!
Whip! Whip! – Nintendo Switch – Released: 6/14/18 – $9.99
Short Review (Review copy provided by Alpha Unit)
Pretty short review so just check out the full review, I would give this game a 9 out of 10!
Love this icon, to me it is just really cute:
Story
The story is actually somewhat fleshed out. When you start up a new game you are presented a short cutscene. Tira is looking for a legendary dessert, as a dessert hunter, she is searching for this item. She finds Minton unconcious during her search and feed him some honey. Being woken up by the honey unveils that he is a golem that is tasked with helping people with recipes. Tira asks him about the recipe but finds out that he no longer has the recipe and that it has been split into pieces. Tira and Minton team up to find the pieces of the recipes so both can enjoy the legendary dessert.
Gameplay
Gameplay is really simple using Minton you throw him to grab enemies in any direction. Once launched Tira will extent her leg out and any enemy caught in front of the kick is killed. A dessert falls out of them and can be collected for points. The game has several areas with each ending with a full screen boss. These bosses are rather interesting as they all have spots you can grab and then have to aim at locations to cause damage. The game does have a two-player option but does nothing extra for the story. You just have to players one controlling Tira and player 2 controlling a blue version of her.
Personal Experience
I had a great time playing this game. It was a game that I took with me on vacation so this along with Them Bombs and Super Matchensports were played with family. This game wasn’t as praised as the others but as a single player experience it was pretty fun. I loved the bosses but do wish there was an option for a one life or one life + coins option. When you die… you die and have to pick a level again. Any level can be picked but it is a bit of a pain when you are in a groove, die and have to press a few buttons to get back into it. That was the only issue I had with the game, I do love that if someone else wants to play they can just drop in and out quickly. Other than that there is nothing wrong with the game would have loved to play this using an arcade stick but I don’t own any. NeoGeo arcade stick would have been a great way to play this game as it reminded me of older NeoGeo titles.
Final Thoughts
This game was definitely made in the wrong time period. Whip Whip feels as though it was made for the NeoGeo in mind and would sit great next to a machine like Bubble Bobble. It is interesting that an unknown developer, for me anyway, created a game that I have been going back to a lot. I would give this game a 9 out of 10! Only thing really missing was an option to play as a coin-op that would have made this game a perfect 10 out of 10 for me.
