Short Review (Review copy provided by Mixed Bag)

The Wardrobe is a very interesting concept but goes a bit overboard every chance it gets. If you decide to run through the game it would only take around 2-3 hours but if you take your time closer to 4-5 hours. If you aren’t up to date with many things than this game will go right over your head. Many of the jokes are either for the older generations or geared to the younger generations. During your journey with Skinny, you find dozens of characters that couldn’t be stranger. This is its greatest experience since all the characters are enjoyable and even though they don’t enhance the story in anyway but they provide some great laughs. My favorite is the Crocodile since he has escaped from a maximum security prison and has a collection of “masks” that range from One Piece to what I think is Hotline Miami. If you are willing to take your time and enjoy the game for what it worth, you will have a great time. If you are in a rush just to complete the game and not take notice of everything around you then you will be annoyed by the game from start to finish. I would give The Wardrobe a 7 out of 10, it has great jokes and nods but can easily go over even my head, a ton of filler to pad out the game and many areas are no longer accessible once you leave them.

Story

Skinny and Ronald go out for a picnic but after Skinny eats a plum, he dies from an allergic reaction. Ronald runs away and leaves his friend there to rot until magically Skinny is reborn into a skeleton and placed in Ronald’s room doomed forever to watch over his friend. Most of the game you will be trying to go unnoticed from people so only Ronald knows about what has happened to you. The game is broken into 3 story but the first one is just about leaving the house and getting into the moving van. This is actually more complicated than it sounds due to movers trying to move objects into the van. Skinny finds himself talking to a crocodile, a robot, and a blind man to figure a way into the van. If I spoil any more of the story we would be talking about mid and late game areas.

Gameplay

This is a point and click adventure and sadly I don’t think these work well if you plan on playing on the big screen. The Wardrobe suffers from the same issues many touch based games have. You will need to use the analog sticks while in TV mode and they are sometimes painful to use. The good part is touchscreen is still the best way of playing any point and click adventure game. The Switch really needs to support a mouse one day to make this much easier on docked play. Besides that it is your typically point and click game where you walk around, interact with objects, and solve puzzles until you complete the game.

Personal Experience

I spent an hour just in the opening few areas since I was enjoying the jokes they provided but after that it was hard to keep talking and interacting with every little thing. This game is full of things to mess with but keeps the ball rolling if you decide to not do any of those things. It is a shame since I would like to spend more time with a fine tooth comb to find everything but there is just so much content. I didn’t leave the house for almost 2 hours after looking over many things. Once I finished the game I wanted to see how quickly I could do it if I didn’t bother with anything and found it to be rather short. That isn’t a bad thing but in this day in age it is hard to justify the amount of content if the over story is fairly short.

Final Thoughts

While The Wardrobe has many nods and jokes for the old and new generation. It gets bogged down by how much extra you are willing to explore. I was able to finish the game in around 4 hours but after the 1/3 of the way I gave up on how much interacting I was doing. If you are willing to put a ton of time into learning and touching every little detail you are in for a treat but if not it becomes a chore of what to do next. I would give The Wardrobe, a 7 out of 10!

My Gameplay Footage:

Trailer: (Even the trailer is a nod to the Soul Eater anime)

Cocktail: The Wardrobe!

1/2 oz Blueberry Schnapps

1/2 oz Peach Schnapps

1/2 oz Razzmatazz

1/2 oz Watermelon Pucker

3 oz Pepsi/Coke

Decides to go with how many schnapps can I put it before it started tasting bad as a nod to how many clothes a person may have in their closet. It is a solid drink but is very sweet and will not put you in a grave.

End Credits

Decided to take a short break from writing after working on the big #200 and focus on just doing a few normal stuff before work starts back up again. Once it does I will be limited to 2-3 reviews a week again. No way of fixing that unless I get someone else to help out which doesn’t seem to be the case so far. Not really looking and finding someone reliable isn’t really the easiest things.
