Why did they even bother with adding controller support…

Review

VOEZ isn’t just a good music game, it is a great one. I have been playing it on my tablet for years now so the move to Switch was one I couldn’t wait for. A more portable version of the game that included all the songs which I never purchased on my tablet due to the pricing. If you plan on getting the mobile version, you will be mistaken real quick once you add up all the prices. It is a real shame since it more expensive on mobile than on the Switch. Purchasing the Switch version also comes with the added benefit of having controller support…. and it is the most half baked idea for a rhythm game.

The combination of moving your fingers along the screen in rhythmic motions as the notes fly toward you is very graceful but once you add a controller, it is a different story. Originally I thought it was going to be a great idea but think about it for a second…. Now think of something like Rock Band or Guitar Hero with a controller. Yeah, it is just as bad as you think. VOEZ decided the best method would be allowing all button to act as a trigger for all the notes so if two notes at the same time need to be played you play just one button. Cool…. actually no since now the game can be played 100% easily just by mashing the buttons are quickly as possible. There is no divide either so if you want to play a note on the far left side of the screen, you can tap the A button. What about a note on the far left side, just tap the A button.

Now that is the worse of it, which is great since the game itself has excellent music and enough that I will take a very long time to complete. I have been playing the free songs for years so going into this game once a physical version was set to release made me super happy. If you don’t know by now I am actually a Pianist so playing games like this will always have a special place in my heart. It creates the perfect mix of enjoying a game and loving every minute of basically “learning” a new piece. It is a strange feeling to explain so if you are in the same boat as me when it comes to music you will know the feeling.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to being biased this is by far the highest on the list so if you like games like Superbeat, MUSYNX or DEEMO you will like this game. I have been playing another music game that I hope to cover soon but for now this has been my go to when I am sitting around not doing much.

My Gameplay Footage:

Can’t really get footage of me playing so best to just check out the trailer.

End Credits

Another one day and started working on some NEOGEO games to fit between reviews so you can likely check those out starting next week. They will be fairly short so I am going to need a name for that series of videos since I don’t want to just put them in the same place as the full reviews. These games will not include many things as well like cocktails or gameplay. As always I’ll see you in the next review!
