Nintendo Switch – Squareboy vs Bullies: Arena Edition #26

Why is the D-pad better for movement than JoySticks?

Squareboy vs Bullies: Arena Edition – Nintendo Switch – Released: 10/12/17 – $4.99

Short Review (Review Copy provided by Developer)

This game is pretty solid but the biggest issue it has is… The joysticks don’t work correctly. If you try going diagonally with them your character is locked into a 4-way movement so it tries its best to move left and right or down and up. Surprisingly this doesn’t happen when you use the D-pad which I have no idea why it is mapped that way. Other than that issue the game plays fine it is just a simple beat em’ up style game. The game has a little over 10 stages with a range of different bullies. The game is by no means an impressive game since it is just a mobile port of a game but that doesn’t mean you should just let it go by you. The game starts you off with you getting beat up and a mysterious man saves you and you learn Martial Arts from him so you can beat up the bullies. Now you go from area to area clearing out the bullies until they are no more and that’s about it.

I DID GET CONFIRMATION THAT A PATCH TO FIX THE JOYSTICKS IS IN THE WORKS!

Story

The story is pretty simple, you are Squareboy and you stand up to the bullies and get your butt handed to you. You are then trained by a martial arts master to defeat the bullies. It is now your job to go around beating up all the bullies… Not sure if this makes you the new bad guy or the hero.

Gameplay

Simple beat em’ up with basic controls with a small size of combos. The game gives you all of these right from the start but most attacks are centered around which direction you press as you attack. 4 B presses give you a basic combo, Up and B give you a jump punch, then you have double tap up and B for spin punch and double tap down for spin kick. That is all you really need to know and when you get close you can grab them. The arena mode is pretty good but the only issue I had was since it was always one on four they got a lot of cheap shots on me with projectiles.

Personal Experience

I didn’t figure out the joysticks issue until I was almost done my review since that was one part I didn’t check. Once I did it was an entirely different game the clunky controls were gone and I was happy with the experience. Just hope they fix this in the long run so people don’t think it is a terrible game because of controls.

Final Thoughts

Wait on it! I would say wait for a sale since the game is fun and currently there aren’t many beat em’ ups but this game doesn’t offer a whole lot. If you have someone younger and want to give them something easy go for it.

UPDATE: 5/30/18

I would give this game a 6 out of 10!

End Credits

Going to keep it simple since I am currently sick and working on other reviews 😦 I will be posting some Let’s Play footage likely tomorrow or Sunday depending on what I am doing. This weekend was kind of a bust but I will likely be preparing more Green Gamer reviews with some new games. I know none have come out yet but I want to be sure I have a set number of them before I post since I want it to be bi-weekly. If I don’t have enough for a full month I know I won’t have enough time to get my girlfriend here to play some games.
