Slide here, slide there, kill this person, and slide away…
Slayaway Camp Butcher’s Cut – Nintendo Switch – Released: 3/22/18 – $14.99
Short Review (Review copy provided by Digerati)
This is a fairly short review so just read the full review, I give this game a 9 out of 10!
Final try since I’m not sure if I like them or not may just go back to the dash picture:
Story
There are multiple stories in this game but they all play out like a B Horror movie. You will take control of one of the killers as you play out scenes from a movie. The first one is a rip off of Friday the 13th and you go around the camp killing off characters one by one until the final scene when you complete the movie. All the stories are pretty much the same but you control a different killer.
Gameplay
This is where things get a bit interesting since the game plays more like a puzzle game than anything else. Going by the title you wouldn’t really know this. Each scene has a set number of people to kill and you have to slide in a direction until you reach the person. Once you kill the people you will need to navigate to the portal where you can proceed to the next scene. When you kill the final person you will need to perform a finishing movie that feels like something out of God of War. After you complete all the scenes for the movie you are taken to a shop screen. Here you can buy merch and new playable killers. I do love that the game in the beginning gives you the option to have light killing that is PG or brutal killing which is rated R. It is a nice nod to horror movies that don’t have a ton of gore yet still rated high.
Personal Experience
To be honest I have never been a big fan of horror movies so this game was already being put on a different rating. After playing it for a few hours I decided to pop in some of the movies it references and it is funny to look at this game in a different light. If you are a horror movie buff I can easily see this being a game to check out. For me I knew the characters but not the movies so after watching some movies it plays out differently to me. Slayaway Camp is like playing through some of these classic horror movies and a great time if you get all the little nods to those series.
Final Thoughts
This is a great little puzzle game that I can’t wait to unlock everything. Slayaway Camp is a game that I wasn’t really interested in when it came to the trailer since I wasn’t sure what kind of game it was. After playing it though it is a very good time and made me want to watch some classic horror movies. I would like to give this game a 9 out of 10!
